Clinical research shows that guar gum reduces or slows absorption of medications such as penicillin and metformin. To avoid changes in absorption, take guar gum 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here is the thing to keep in mind with guar gum: it forms a thick gel in your gut that can grab onto medicines and slow or lower how much your body absorbs when you take a drug by mouth. For an oral pill, that could mean less of the medicine actually gets into you, which may weaken how well it works.

Now, most mitomycin (Mutamycin, Mitosol) is given by IV or directly into the bladder by your cancer team, so guar gum in the gut would not touch it. The bladder gel form Jelmyto is also placed locally, not swallowed. So in practice this gut-based interaction usually does not apply to how mitomycin is given. Because cancer therapy is so carefully dosed, please run any supplement, including guar gum, past your oncology pharmacist or doctor first before starting it.

Guar gum is a soluble, gel-forming fiber from the guar bean that may modestly help with cholesterol, blood sugar, and bowel regularity. It is generally safe in food amounts, but concentrated supplements can cause gas, bloating, and a risk of throat or gut blockage if not taken with enough water. Always take it with plenty of fluid and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Mitomycin

What Is Mitomycin Used For?

Brand names: Mutamycin, Mitosol, Jelmyto

Mitomycin (and its brand Mutamycin) is used intravenously in combination with other chemotherapy drugs to treat disseminated adenocarcinoma (a type of cancer that has spread) of the stomach or pancreas, when other treatments have not worked. It is not intended to replace surgery or radiation therapy.

Mitomycin is also the active ingredient in other products for different uses: Jelmyto treats low-grade upper tract urothelial cancer (cancer of the upper urinary tract); Zusduri treats recurrent low-grade intermediate-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer; and Mitosol is used as a surgical aid during certain glaucoma eye surgery. These are separate products with distinct indications and are not interchangeable with the intravenous injection form.
