ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Penicillin G Benzathine
Penicillin G Benzathine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Guar Gum interacts with.
Clinical research shows that guar gum reduces or slows absorption of medications such as penicillin and metformin. To avoid changes in absorption, take guar gum 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's something worth knowing about this pairing. Guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and that gel can grab onto certain oral medicines in your gut and slow or reduce how much gets absorbed. Penicillin is one of the drugs studied where this was seen, so the worry is that less of your antibiotic gets into your body, which could make it work less well against your infection.
The good news for this specific product: Penicillin G Benzathine (Bicillin L-A, Permapen) is given as an injection into the muscle, not swallowed. That means guar gum in your stomach should not affect it the way it would an oral pill. If you also take any antibiotic by mouth, separate them by taking guar gum about 30 to 60 minutes after the pill. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist.
