Hercules Club and Temazepam

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Temazepam and Hercules Club in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Temazepam

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Temazepam is filed under 4 classifications — including benzodiazepines, cns depressants, cytochrome p450 3a4 (cyp3a4) substrates. Hercules Club has documented interactions with 3 drug classes — the most serious being antacids (minor), h2-blockers (minor) and proton pump inhibitors (ppis) (minor) — and none of Temazepam’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

What Temazepam’s Own FDA Label Lists

This is not an interaction — none of it involves Hercules Club. These are the most notable effects listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Temazepam’s own FDA label, for the medication by itself. Knowing the drug’s own list makes it easier to work out the likely cause if something new turns up while you take both. 6 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • Memory problems Worth acting on
  • Unsteadiness Worth acting on
  • Hallucinations Worth acting on
  • Confusion Worth acting on
  • Shortness of breath Worth acting on mentioned in 4.8% of FDA reports for Temazepam
  • Low mood Worth acting on
  • Eye irritation or redness
  • Vivid dreams or nightmares
  • Tremor or shakiness
  • Blurred vision

Showing the 10 most notable of 24 label-listed effects — ranked by how unusual each one is across medicines generally, with serious effects weighted up.

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Temazepam. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 37,190 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Temazepam that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Hercules Club’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Hercules Club side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Hercules Club has no side effects.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Temazepam

This page covers Hercules Club only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Temazepam page lists 197 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: 1,4-butanediol (major), Activated Charcoal (major), Beer (major), Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (ghb) (major) and Grapefruit (major).

By severity: 9 major · 150 moderate · 38 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Temazepam page

“Alcohol is the interaction I would flag first for anyone taking temazepam (Restoril), a benzodiazepine sleep medicine. Beer and wine both carry major ratings because they layer their own sedation on top of a drug that already depresses the nervous system, and that additive drowsiness runs through 78 of the 197 supplements on file.”

About Hercules Club

What is Hercules Club?

Hercules Club
  • Toothache and mouth pain
  • Indigestion and sluggish digestion
  • Rheumatism and joint pain
  • Circulation (as a stimulant or tonic)
  • Sore throat

Hercules Club (southern prickly ash) is a traditional folk remedy used mainly for toothache, digestion, and joint pain, often by chewing the bark, which causes a tingling, numbing feeling in the mouth. Modern scientific evidence supporting these uses is very limited, and safety has not been well studied, so it is best to talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it.

Zanthoxylum clava-herculis · Rutaceae · Bark, roots, and berries · Dried bark, tinctures, teas, and topical preparations

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Hercules Club is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Hercules Club record says about it on its own.

Hercules Club: dosing

There is no established standardized dose for Hercules Club. Traditional use varied widely, and product strengths differ from one brand to another. If you choose to use a commercial product, follow the directions on the label and do not exceed them.
