Theoretically, hu zhang might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Hu zhang contains the constituent resveratrol. In vitro research shows that resveratrol might inhibit the CYP1A2 enzyme. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with Nextstellis (drospirenone plus estetrol) and Hu Zhang. This herb is rich in resveratrol, and in test-tube studies resveratrol can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. In theory, blocking that enzyme could let a medication it processes build up a bit more in your body. For your birth control pill, that might mean slightly stronger hormone exposure, which could show up as nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, mood changes, or some spotting.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's purely theoretical, based on lab data, and it has never actually been reported in real people. Food amounts wouldn't worry me, but concentrated supplements are a different story. Before adding Hu Zhang, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

Theoretically, hu zhang might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Hu zhang contains the constituent resveratrol. In vitro research shows that resveratrol might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. However, a clinical study in adults with NAFLD found that adding resveratrol 3000 mg daily for 8 weeks did not necessitate dose adjustments to any established medications metabolized by CYP3A4.

Nextstellis combines two hormones (drospirenone and estetrol) that your body partly clears through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Hu Zhang contains resveratrol, which in test-tube studies might slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, your hormone levels could nudge a little higher, which can mean more of the usual estrogen-type effects like breast tenderness, nausea, bloating, headaches, or mood changes.

Here's the reassuring part: this is only a theoretical concern from lab work. In an actual human study, large doses of resveratrol didn't force any medication adjustments. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since this is your birth control, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before starting Hu Zhang.

Nextstellis contains two hormones, drospirenone and estetrol, with the estetrol part being a form of estrogen. Hu Zhang is rich in resveratrol, which in lab dish studies can act a little like estrogen itself. The concern on file is theoretical: by competing at estrogen receptors, the herb might slightly blunt how your body responds to the estrogen in your pill.

To be clear, this comes only from test-tube research, not real people, so we don't know if it matters in everyday life. Still, since this pill is also a birth control method, I wouldn't want anything quietly nudging its reliability or causing breakthrough spotting. Casual amounts in food are unlikely to be an issue, but before using concentrated Hu Zhang supplements, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
