Why this applies to Amantadine

Amantadine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Iboga interacts with.

Theoretically, iboga might decrease the effectiveness of anticholinergic drugs.
In vitro research shows that iboga can inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels. However, the constituent ibogaine does not appear to have this effect.

Here is the idea behind this one. Amantadine has some mild anticholinergic action, meaning it tends to dial down the brain chemical acetylcholine, which is part of how it helps with Parkinson's symptoms and drug-related movement problems. In lab dish studies, Iboga seemed to do the opposite by raising acetylcholine levels. If that held true in people, it could theoretically work against amantadine and make it a bit less effective, so tremor, stiffness, or movement control might not be as well managed.

But please keep this in perspective. This is only test-tube data, and the main Iboga compound, ibogaine, did not show this effect. Honestly, the much bigger concern is that Iboga itself is risky and can cause dangerous heart rhythm changes, and it is illegal in the U.S. I would not combine these. Please talk with your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

What Is Amantadine Used For?

Brand names: Symmetrel, Gocovri, Osmolex ER

Amantadine capsules, tablets, and oral solution are used to prevent or treat uncomplicated respiratory illness caused by influenza A virus strains. They are also used in the treatment of parkinsonism and drug-induced extrapyramidal reactions (movement problems caused by certain medications).

Gocovri (an extended-release amantadine capsule) has two specific approved uses: treating dyskinesia (uncontrolled, involuntary movements) in people with Parkinson's disease who are taking levodopa-based therapy, and as an add-on treatment to levodopa/carbidopa for people experiencing "off" episodes (periods when Parkinson's symptoms return or worsen).
