Iboga + Amiodarone
Amiodarone brand names: Pacerone, Cordarone.
Amiodarone falls into 2 drug categories that Iboga can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, iboga may have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Iboga interacts with whole categories of medication. Amiodarone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Iboga in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Amiodarone
Amiodarone falls under QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS — the group Iboga interacts with.
Numerous case reports suggest that ibogaine, a constituent in iboga, can cause QT interval prolongation.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the heart of the issue with these two together. Amiodarone is one of the strongest medicines we have for stretching out the heart's electrical cycle, something we call the QT interval. Iboga, through its active compound ibogaine, appears to do the very same thing. Stacking them can add up, and a QT interval that gets too long can trigger a dangerous, even deadly, heart rhythm called torsades de pointes.
I'll be honest about the evidence: this concern is mostly theoretical, built on scattered case reports of ibogaine alone causing rhythm trouble. But amiodarone is a high-stakes drug where small changes matter, and ibogaine carries real risk of its own. Please don't combine them without talking to your doctor or pharmacist first.

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) INHIBITORS
2 of 2Amiodarone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) INHIBITORS.
Ibogaine, the active constituent of iboga, is a substrate of CYP2D6. One pharmacokinetic study shows that taking the CYP2D6 inhibitor paroxetine prior to taking ibogaine 20 mg increases the exposure to ibogaine and its metabolite noribogaine by 2-fold when compared with ibogaine alone.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the key thing to understand: this interaction runs in the supplement's direction, not the other way around. Amiodarone is a known blocker of the liver enzyme CYP2D6, and ibogaine (the active compound in Iboga) depends on that same enzyme to be cleared from your body. So when amiodarone slows that pathway, ibogaine and its byproduct noribogaine can build up to higher levels, in one study roughly doubling.
Why this matters so much here: both amiodarone and ibogaine can dangerously disturb your heart's rhythm (QT prolongation). Stacking them could seriously raise the risk of a life-threatening arrhythmia. On top of that, ibogaine itself is illegal in the U.S. and carries real risk of death. Please don't combine these, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist about any concerns.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Amiodarone page
“Amiodarone (Pacerone, Cordarone) treats dangerous heart rhythms, and this is one supplement list I would genuinely be careful with. Of the 210 ingredients on file, 11 carry a major rating, and the everyday one is grapefruit, which blocks the liver enzyme that clears amiodarone and can push the drug's level higher than intended.”

About Iboga
What is Iboga?
- Drug and alcohol addiction
- Opioid withdrawal
- Spiritual and ceremonial rituals
- Fatigue and stimulant effects
- Mood and emotional issues
Iboga is a Central African shrub whose root bark contains ibogaine, a powerful hallucinogenic compound studied mainly for addiction. It carries serious safety risks, including dangerous heart rhythm changes and deaths, and ibogaine is illegal in the United States and many other countries. We do not recommend its use outside of tightly controlled research settings.
About Amiodarone
What Is Amiodarone Used For?
Brand names: Pacerone, Cordarone
Amiodarone is prescribed for adults with serious, life-threatening heart-rhythm problems that haven't responded to other medications. Specifically, it's used for two dangerous arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats): recurrent ventricular fibrillation (a chaotic, potentially fatal heart rhythm) and recurrent ventricular tachycardia (a dangerously fast heart rhythm that causes unstable blood pressure).
Because amiodarone comes with significant risks, doctors reserve it for situations where other options haven't worked or can't be tolerated. It is not a first-choice medication — it's a last-resort tool for serious, life-threatening conditions.
