Why this applies to Rivastigmine

Rivastigmine falls under CHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Iboga interacts with.

Theoretically, iboga might have additive effects with cholinergic drugs.
In vitro research shows that iboga can inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels. However, the constituent ibogaine does not appear to have this effect.

Here's the idea behind this one. Rivastigmine works by blocking an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase, which raises levels of acetylcholine in the brain to help with memory and thinking. Lab studies suggest Iboga might block that same enzyme, so in theory the two could pile on top of each other and push acetylcholine higher than intended.

If that happened, you might see more of rivastigmine's typical cholinergic side effects, things like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, drooling, or a slow heartbeat. I'll be honest though: this is only a theoretical concern from test-tube work, and the main active compound in Iboga (ibogaine) didn't show this effect. Separately, Iboga itself carries serious heart and safety risks and is illegal in the U.S., so please talk with your doctor or pharmacist before combining anything.

Rivastigmine treats dementia — the memory loss, confusion, and thinking problems that come with certain brain diseases. The specific conditions it's approved for depend on the form.

Rivastigmine Tartrate capsules are approved for mild-to-moderate dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease. The skin patch forms — including Exelon, Rivastigmine, and Rivastigmine Transdermal System — are approved for mild, moderate, and severe Alzheimer's disease dementia, as well as mild-to-moderate dementia associated with Parkinson's disease.
