Midostaurin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Indian Long Pepper interacts with.

Theoretically, Indian long pepper might increase the effects and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that piperine, a constituent of Indian long pepper, inhibits CYP3A4.

Here's the gist for Rydapt (midostaurin). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this medicine down. The piperine in Indian long pepper can slow that enzyme down a bit, at least in lab studies. If it does the same thing in people, midostaurin could clear more slowly and build up in your blood, which may mean stronger effects and more side effects like nausea, vomiting, mouth sores, low blood counts, tiredness, or swelling.

I'll be honest, this is theoretical and based on lab data, not real patient studies, so the risk isn't proven. Still, since midostaurin is a serious cancer medicine, please don't add Indian long pepper supplements without first checking with your oncology team or pharmacist.

What Is Midostaurin Used For?

Brand name: Rydapt

  • Midostaurin is used with other chemotherapy drugs to treat certain types of acute myeloid leukemia (AML; a type of cancer of the white blood cells). Midostaurin is also used to certain types of mastocytosis (a blood disorder in which there are too many mast cells [a certain kind of white blood cell]). Midostaurin is in a class of medications called kinase inhibitors. It works by blocking the action of the abnormal protein that signals cancer cells to multiply. This helps stop the spread of mast and cancer cells.
