ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Dapagliflozin

Dapagliflozin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Inulin interacts with.

Theoretically, inulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia with antidiabetes drugs.
Some clinical research shows that inulin improves glycemic control in patients with diabetes; however, it is unclear if it has hypoglycemic effects.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with Farxiga (dapagliflozin) and inulin: this is a very minor, mostly theoretical concern. Inulin is a fermentable fiber that your gut bacteria turn into short-chain fatty acids, and some studies suggest it may modestly improve blood sugar control over time. Stacked on top of a blood sugar medicine like dapagliflozin, the thinking is that your numbers could drift a little lower than expected.

In real life, dapagliflozin on its own rarely causes low blood sugar, so adding inulin is unlikely to tip you into a true hypoglycemic episode. Still, it's reasonable to keep an eye out for shakiness, sweating, or lightheadedness, especially if you're also on insulin or a sulfonylurea. If you notice changes, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor before adjusting anything.
