Here's the gist with fostamatinib (Tavalisse) and kefir. Fostamatinib calms down an overactive immune system to stop your body from destroying platelets, so it can leave your defenses against germs a little weaker. Kefir, on the other hand, is a fermented drink packed with live bacteria and yeast. The theory is that swallowing all those live microbes while your immune system is dialed down could make a bacterial or yeast infection a bit more likely.

I want to be honest: this concern is theoretical and comes from lab-type reasoning, not from real cases in people drinking kefir. For most folks it's likely fine, but if your immune system is significantly suppressed, it's worth a quick chat with your doctor or pharmacist before making kefir a regular habit. Don't change your fostamatinib either way on your own.

What Is Fostamatinib Used For?

Brand name: Tavalisse

Tavalisse (fostamatinib) is used to treat thrombocytopenia — dangerously low platelet counts — in adults with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). It is specifically for people whose platelet counts have not improved enough with at least one earlier ITP treatment.

The goal is to raise platelet counts high enough to reduce the risk of serious bleeding. If platelet counts do not respond sufficiently after 12 weeks, the medication is typically stopped.
