L-cysteine + rosiglitazone, glimepiride
rosiglitazone, glimepiride brand name: Avandaryl.
L-cysteine has a moderate interaction with rosiglitazone, glimepiride. Theoretically, taking L-cysteine supplements with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
Why this applies to rosiglitazone, glimepiride
rosiglitazone, glimepiride falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group L-cysteine interacts with.
Animal research suggests that L-cysteine can have hypoglycemic effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Avandaryl combines two diabetes medicines: glimepiride, which tells your pancreas to release more insulin, and rosiglitazone, which makes your body more sensitive to insulin. Both already work to lower blood sugar. The concern here is that L-cysteine may have its own mild blood-sugar-lowering effect, so stacking it on top could, in theory, push your numbers too low.
I want to be straight with you: this is based only on animal studies, not human research, so the evidence is weak and the risk is mostly theoretical. Still, glimepiride can already cause hypoglycemia (shakiness, sweating, dizziness, confusion). If you add L-cysteine, keep an eye on your readings and watch for those signs. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.

- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

This page covers L-cysteine only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the rosiglitazone, glimepiride page lists 308 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Siberian Cocklebur (major), Acai (moderate), Adrafinil (moderate) and African Wild Potato (moderate).
By severity: 2 major · 258 moderate · 48 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the rosiglitazone, glimepiride page
“Siberian cocklebur worries me most on this page. Its seeds have caused severe, worsening drops in blood sugar in people, and rosiglitazone with glimepiride (Avandaryl) already pulls glucose down through two separate mechanisms, so these pairings deserve real vigilance.”

About L-cysteine
What is L-cysteine?
- Antioxidant support
- Skin and hair health
- Liver support
- Respiratory and mucus thinning
- General protein/amino acid supplementation
L-cysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid your body uses to make proteins and the antioxidant glutathione. Most people get enough from food, and supplements are usually well tolerated, but strong evidence supporting specific health benefits from extra L-cysteine is limited. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a health condition.
