Lacticaseibacillus Paracasei and Cloxacillin Sodium

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Cloxacillin Sodium

Cloxacillin Sodium falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lacticaseibacillus Paracasei interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Lacticaseibacillus paracasei with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. paracasei.
L. paracasei preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. paracasei preparations by at least two hours.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: cloxacillin is an antibiotic, and antibiotics don't pick and choose. While it's busy killing the bacteria causing your infection, it can also kill off the friendly bacteria in your probiotic. So taking your L. paracasei at the same time as cloxacillin may just waste the probiotic, since many of those live organisms won't survive.

Good news, this doesn't make your cloxacillin less effective or more risky. Your antibiotic still works fine against your infection. The easy fix is timing: take your probiotic and your cloxacillin at least two hours apart so the probiotic has a better chance to do its job. This is based on how these products work rather than hard studies, but separating them is a sensible, low-cost habit. Check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Cloxacillin Sodium page

“The entries that concern me most on cloxacillin sodium (Tegopen, Cloxapen), a penicillin antibiotic used against staph infections, are the ones that strain the kidneys or stop the drug from getting absorbed at all. Siberian cocklebur and asarabacca can add to kidney stress, and activated charcoal can soak up the antibiotic itself, so t…”
