Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus johnsonii with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. johnsonii.
Lactobacillus johnsonii preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. johnsonii preparations by at least two hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing: ofloxacin is an antibiotic, and its job is to kill bacteria. Your probiotic, Lactobacillus johnsonii, is made of live, friendly bacteria. So if you swallow them at the same time, the ofloxacin can wipe out a good chunk of those probiotic organisms before they ever get to work. The loser in this matchup is the probiotic, not the drug.

The good news is that ofloxacin still treats your infection just fine. This concern is mostly theoretical and easy to manage. A simple fix is to space the two apart by at least two hours. Your probiotic won't change how the antibiotic works or its side effects, so just check timing with your pharmacist.

About Ofloxacin

What Is Ofloxacin Used For?

Brand names: Oflox, Floxin, Floxin Injection, Floxin Otic

Ofloxacin is used in several different forms, each approved for specific infections. The otic (ear) solution treats outer ear infections (otitis externa) in patients 6 months and older, chronic middle ear infections with a ruptured eardrum (chronic suppurative otitis media) in patients 12 and older, and acute middle ear infections in children 1 year and older who have ear tubes. The ophthalmic (eye) solution — including the brand Ocuflox — treats bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) and bacterial corneal ulcers.

Ofloxacin oral tablets treat adults with mild to moderate bacterial infections including community-acquired pneumonia, skin and skin structure infections, gonorrhea, chlamydial infections of the urethra or cervix, mixed urethral/cervical infections, and acute pelvic inflammatory disease. The oral tablet is also used for acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and uncomplicated cystitis, but only when no other treatment options are available, due to serious risk concerns with this drug class.
