Alprazolam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Lemongrass interacts with.

Theoretically, lemongrass might decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear alprazolam out of your system. Lab and animal research suggests lemongrass — and its main aromatic compound, citral — may slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happens in people, alprazolam could hang around longer and build up, which might mean stronger or longer-lasting effects like extra drowsiness, dizziness, foggy thinking, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

The reassuring part: this is only a theoretical concern based on animal data, not proven in humans. The sprinkle of lemongrass in cooking or an occasional cup of tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated lemongrass supplements or essential oil are where I'd be more cautious — so check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining those with Xanax.

What Is Alprazolam Used For?

Brand names: Xanax, Niravam

Alprazolam treats generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, in adults. These uses are supported across multiple alprazolam products, including tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, oral solution, and extended-release tablets.

Xanax (tablet) is indicated for the acute treatment of GAD and for panic disorder. Xanax XR (extended-release tablet) and alprazolam extended-release tablets are indicated specifically for panic disorder with or without agoraphobia — not for GAD. Alprazolam orally disintegrating tablets and alprazolam oral solution are indicated for both GAD and panic disorder.
