Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Atazanavir
Atazanavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Lemongrass interacts with.
Animal research shows that lemongrass and its constituent citral inhibit CYP3A4.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for your HIV medicine. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down atazanavir (Reyataz). Lemongrass, especially its compound citral, has shown in lab and animal studies that it can slow that same enzyme down. If that held true in people, atazanavir could clear more slowly and build up in your blood, which may nudge up side effects like nausea, stomach upset, or that yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice) that this drug is known for.
I want to be honest, though — this is theoretical and only based on lab and animal data, not real human studies. The tea or seasoning amounts in food are unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated supplements or the essential oil are the bigger question mark. Since keeping HIV controlled is so important, please run any lemongrass supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.
