Why this applies to Atazanavir

Atazanavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Acacia Rigidula interacts with.

Theoretically, Acacia rigidula products that are adulterated with beta-methylphenylethylamine (BMPEA) might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that BMPEA, an adulterant found in many Acacia rigidula products, inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme by 37%.

Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear atazanavir (Reyataz) from your system. Some Acacia rigidula products are tainted with a stimulant called BMPEA, and lab-dish studies suggest BMPEA can partly block that same enzyme. If that happened in real life, atazanavir could build up higher than expected, which may mean more side effects like nausea, headache, or the yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice) that this drug is known for.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's only theoretical, based on test-tube data, not people. But Acacia rigidula products are poorly regulated and risky on their own. I'd skip it and check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding anything new to your HIV regimen.

Acacia rigidula is a shrub from Texas and Mexico that is marketed in weight-loss and energy supplements. There is very little reliable human evidence that it works, and some products have been found to contain an unapproved stimulant drug (BMPEA), which raises real safety concerns. About Atazanavir

What Is Atazanavir Used For?

Brand name: Reyataz

Atazanavir capsules are used together with other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and in children 6 years and older who weigh at least 15 kg (about 33 lbs).

Reyataz — available as capsules and as an oral powder — is also approved for HIV-1 treatment in adults and in children as young as 3 months who weigh at least 5 kg (about 11 lbs). Reyataz oral powder must always be taken with ritonavir and food, and is not for use in children weighing less than 5 kg.
