Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestimate
Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestimate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Lemongrass interacts with.
Animal research shows that lemongrass and its constituent citral inhibit CYP3A4.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your birth control pill (Ortho Tri-Cyclen and similar brands) is partly cleared from your body by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab and animal studies, lemongrass and its main aromatic compound (citral) appear to slow that enzyme down. In theory, if lemongrass blocked it in people too, a bit more estrogen could linger in your system, which might nudge up the usual side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or spotting.
Here's the honest part: this is only suggested by test-tube and animal research, not real human studies, so it's far from proven. The lemongrass in food and an occasional cup of tea is very unlikely to matter. If you use concentrated lemongrass supplements or the essential oil regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.
