Theoretically, lemongrass might decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist with panobinostat (Farydak). Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this cancer drug down. Lab and animal studies hint that lemongrass (and its lemony compound citral) may slow that same enzyme. If that holds true in people, less panobinostat would be cleared, so more could build up in your system.

With a potent chemo drug, higher levels can mean stronger side effects: more nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, low blood counts, and importantly heart rhythm changes (QT prolongation). I want to be honest though, this is only theoretical and based on animal data, not human studies. A splash of lemongrass tea or seasoning is unlikely to matter, but concentrated supplements or the essential oil are a different story. Please run any lemongrass product past your oncology team first.

What Is Panobinostat Used For?

Brand name: Farydak

  • Panobinostat is used in combination with bortezomib (Velcade) and dexamethasone to treat people with multiple myeloma (a type of cancer of the bone marrow) who have already been treated two other medications, including bortezomib (Velcade). Panobinostat is in a class of medications called histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors. It works by killing cancer cells.
