Lime + Hydroxyzine
Hydroxyzine brand names: Atarax, Vistaril, Ucerax.
Hydroxyzine falls into 2 drug categories that Lime can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, concomitant use of lime oil with photosensitizing drugs may increase the risk of phototoxicity.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Lime interacts with whole categories of medication. Hydroxyzine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Lime in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Hydroxyzine
Hydroxyzine falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Lime interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with lime and hydroxyzine: this isn't about lime changing how your body absorbs or breaks down the medicine. Instead, certain compounds in concentrated lime oil can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, and hydroxyzine is grouped with medicines that may do the same. Put the two together and, in theory, you might sunburn or develop a skin reaction more easily.
I'll be honest, this one is mostly theoretical, based on lab and animal data rather than real patients. Eating a lime or having it in your drink is very unlikely to matter. The bigger concern would be applying concentrated lime essential oil to your skin and then heading into strong sun. To be safe, use sunscreen and check with your pharmacist if you're using lime oil products.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Hydroxyzine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the basic idea: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down hydroxyzine. Lime contains plant compounds that, in animal studies, slowed this same enzyme down. If that happened in people, hydroxyzine could clear a little more slowly and build up, which might make its sedating side effects stronger. Think extra drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, or feeling foggy the next day.
That said, the evidence here is weak. It comes from rats given high doses of lime juice, not from people. A squeeze of lime in your food or a drink is very unlikely to cause a problem. I'd only be cautious with concentrated lime supplements or large amounts. If you take hydroxyzine regularly, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Lime
What is Lime?
- Source of vitamin C
- Digestive upset
- Skin care
- Mood and aromatherapy
- Flavoring and food preservation
Lime is a common citrus fruit and a good natural source of vitamin C and plant antioxidants. As a food it is generally safe and enjoyed by most people, but evidence that lime treats any specific health condition is limited. Use the essential oil with care, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated lime products for health reasons.
About Hydroxyzine
What Is Hydroxyzine Used For?
Brand names: Atarax, Vistaril, Ucerax
Hydroxyzine by mouth (tablets, capsules, oral solution and syrup) is used for short-term relief of anxiety and tension linked to psychoneurosis (long-standing anxiety-type emotional conditions). It is also used when anxiety is part of another physical illness.
It helps with itching from allergic conditions such as chronic urticaria (hives) and atopic and contact dermatoses (eczema-type and irritant or allergic skin rashes). It is also used as a sedative before and after general anesthesia. Hydroxyzine hydrochloride intramuscular injection has additional uses, including acutely disturbed patients, alcohol withdrawal anxiety, delirium tremens, nausea and vomiting (not pregnancy-related), and as an add-on around surgery and childbirth.
