Omacetaxine Mepesuccinate falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Mace interacts with.

Animal research suggests that mace lignans can suppress immune function. Theoretically, concomitant use might enhance the effects of immunosuppressant drugs. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).

Here's the situation with mace and your omacetaxine (Synribo). Omacetaxine already works by slowing down cancer cells, and one of its expected effects is lowering your immune defenses and your blood counts. The concern on file is that compounds in mace have, in animal studies only, shown a tendency to dampen the immune system too. So in theory, stacking the two could add up and push your immune function and white blood cell counts even lower than the drug alone would.

I want to be clear that this is theoretical and based on lab and animal data, not real-world cases. Using mace as a normal cooking spice is very unlikely to matter. The caution is really about concentrated mace supplements. Before adding any, please run it by your oncology team or pharmacist first.

What Is Omacetaxine Injection Used For?

  • Omacetaxine injection is used to treat adults with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML; a type of cancer of the white blood cells) who have already been treated with at least two other medications for CML and can no longer benefit from these medications or cannot take these medications due to side effects. Omacetaxine injection is in a class of medications called protein synthesis inhibitors. It works by slowing the growth of cancer cells.
