Why this applies to Flurazepam

Flurazepam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Mace interacts with.

Several volatile oils in mace, such as methyleugenol, isoeugenol, safrole, myristicin, 1,8-cineole, and geranyl acetate, seem to have sedative effects. Evidence from animal research suggests that methyleugenol can induce anesthesia for a similar duration as pentobarbital. Due to the sedative effects of certain mace constituents, taking medicinal amounts of mace in combination with other CNS depressants may have additive effects. However, evidence from other animal research suggests that myristicin can reduce sleeping time in rats pretreated with phenobarbital. Until more is known, use medicinal amounts of mace cautiously in combination with CNS depressants. Some CNS depressants include clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), phenobarbital (Donnatal), zolpidem (Ambien), and others.

Flurazepam is a benzodiazepine sleep aid that calms brain activity to help you fall and stay asleep. Here's the thing about mace: some of the aromatic oils in it (like myristicin and methyleugenol) appear to have their own mild sedating effect, at least in lab and animal studies. So in theory, pairing concentrated mace with flurazepam could stack the calming effects on top of each other.

If that happened, you might feel extra drowsy, groggy, foggy-headed, dizzy, or unsteady on your feet, especially the morning after. I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on lab work, not proven in people, and using mace as a normal cooking spice almost certainly won't matter. The caution is really about large medicinal doses. Before trying any concentrated mace supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Mace is the lacy red covering of the nutmeg seed and comes from the same tree as nutmeg. It is mostly used as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine for digestion, but there is little solid human research to support its health uses. Flurazepam Hydrochloride capsules are used to treat insomnia. Specifically, they help with difficulty falling asleep, frequent wake-ups during the night, and early morning awakening.

Because insomnia is often short-lived, flurazepam is generally intended for short-term use. If sleep problems don't improve within 7 to 10 days of treatment, a healthcare provider should evaluate whether an underlying medical or psychiatric condition may be the cause.
