Beclomethasone dipropionate falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Mace interacts with.

Animal research suggests that mace lignans can suppress immune function. Theoretically, concomitant use might enhance the effects of immunosuppressant drugs. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).

Here's the practical picture for your Qvar or QNASL. Beclomethasone is an inhaled or nasal steroid, so it's grouped with immune-suppressing medicines. The concern on file is purely theoretical: in animal studies, certain compounds in mace appeared to dampen the immune system, and on paper that could add to a steroid's calming effect on inflammation. There is no solid human evidence that this actually happens.

I want to keep this in perspective. Beclomethasone works mostly right in your airways or nose, with very little reaching the rest of your body, so a true interaction is unlikely. Using mace as a normal cooking spice is not something I'd worry about. Concentrated mace supplements are a different story, so check with your pharmacist before taking those.

Mace is the lacy red covering of the nutmeg seed and comes from the same tree as nutmeg. It is mostly used as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine for digestion, but there is little solid human research to support its health uses. In normal food amounts it is generally safe, but large doses can be toxic, so use it as a spice and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated supplements.

What Is Beclomethasone Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand names: Qvar, QNASL

Beclomethasone dipropionate HFA inhalation aerosol (brand: Qvar Redihaler) is used for the ongoing, daily management of asthma in adults and children 5 years of age and older. It is a preventive (maintenance) therapy — not a rescue inhaler — meaning it helps control asthma over time rather than treating sudden symptoms.

Important: Qvar Redihaler is not for the relief of sudden asthma attacks or acute bronchospasm. Always keep a separate fast-acting (rescue) inhaler on hand for those moments.
