Animal research suggests that mace lignans can suppress immune function. Theoretically, concomitant use might enhance the effects of immunosuppressant drugs. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).

Here's the gist with mace and prednisone: prednisone calms down your immune system, and some animal studies hint that compounds in mace (lignans) may dampen immunity too. The worry on paper is that taking them together could add up and push immune suppression a little further than intended, which might raise your odds of catching infections or being slower to fight them off.

I want to be honest though, this is purely theoretical and based on lab and animal work, not real people. Using mace as a kitchen spice is very unlikely to cause any problem. The question really only comes up with concentrated mace supplements. Before starting any mace capsule or extract while on prednisone, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Mace is the lacy red covering of the nutmeg seed and comes from the same tree as nutmeg. It is mostly used as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine for digestion, but there is little solid human research to support its health uses.
