Mace and Beclomethasone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Beclomethasone

Beclomethasone falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Mace interacts with.

Animal research suggests that mace lignans can suppress immune function. Theoretically, concomitant use might enhance the effects of immunosuppressant drugs. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with mace and your beclomethasone inhaler. Beclomethasone is an inhaled corticosteroid, which means it gently dials down the immune activity and swelling inside your airways. Some animal studies hint that compounds in mace (its lignans) might also nudge the immune system down a bit, so in theory the two could add up.

I'll be honest with you: this concern is theoretical and based on lab and animal work, not on real cases in people. On top of that, inhaled beclomethasone acts mostly right in your lungs, so very little reaches the rest of your body. Normal cooking amounts of mace are very unlikely to cause any problem. I'd only pause over concentrated mace supplements, and if you take those, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Beclomethasone page

“Most people on beclomethasone (Beclovent, Vanceril) use it daily to keep asthma or nasal allergies quiet, and plenty also take herbal products, which is where this list earns real caution. Of the 202 ingredients on this page, four rate major, and those deserve your attention ahead of everything else.”

About Mace

What is Mace?

  • Digestive upset and gas
  • Flavoring and culinary spice
  • Nausea
  • Appetite stimulation
  • Traditional pain or muscle relief

Mace is the lacy red covering of the nutmeg seed and comes from the same tree as nutmeg. It is mostly used as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine for digestion, but there is little solid human research to support its health uses. In normal food amounts it is generally safe, but large doses can be toxic, so use it as a spice and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated supplements.

About Beclomethasone Oral Inhalation

What Is Beclomethasone Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand names: Beclovent, Vanceril

Beclomethasone dipropionate HFA inhalation aerosol (the oral inhaler, sold as Qvar Redihaler) is used for the long-term, preventive treatment of asthma in people 5 years of age and older.

It is not a rescue inhaler. It does not relieve sudden asthma symptoms such as shortness of breath. The nasal spray form, Qnasl, appears in the supplied label text in studies of allergic rhinitis (nasal allergy symptoms), but no approved uses for it are listed there.
