Methylprednisolone falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Mace interacts with.

Animal research suggests that mace lignans can suppress immune function. Theoretically, concomitant use might enhance the effects of immunosuppressant drugs. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).

Here's the short version on combining mace with methylprednisolone (Medrol). Methylprednisolone is a corticosteroid that calms inflammation by quieting parts of your immune system. The concern on file is that compounds in mace may also dampen immune activity. In theory, stacking the two could push that immune-lowering effect a little further than expected.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes from animal studies only, so it's a 'just in case' caution, not a proven problem in people. Normal cooking amounts of mace are very unlikely to matter. Concentrated mace supplements are the real question mark. Since your steroid already affects infection risk, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding any mace supplement.

Mace is the lacy red covering of the nutmeg seed and comes from the same tree as nutmeg. It is mostly used as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine for digestion, but there is little solid human research to support its health uses. In normal food amounts it is generally safe, but large doses can be toxic, so use it as a spice and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated supplements.

What Is Methylprednisolone Used For?

Methylprednisolone tablets (Medrol, Methylpred DP) are used to treat a broad set of conditions including endocrine disorders, rheumatic and joint conditions, autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, severe allergic states, skin diseases, eye inflammation, breathing disorders like asthma, blood and kidney diseases, and certain cancers.

Methylprednisolone acetate injection (Depo-Medrol and others) is used by intramuscular injection when oral therapy isn't feasible, and can also be given directly into joints, soft tissue, or lesions to treat local inflammation from conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, and skin disorders. The injection is not approved for intrathecal (spinal) use.
