Ashwagandha and Beclomethasone

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Ashwagandha interacts with whole categories of medication. Beclomethasone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Ashwagandha in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Beclomethasone

Beclomethasone falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Ashwagandha interacts with.

Theoretically, taking ashwagandha might decrease the effects of immunosuppressants.
Ashwagandha has demonstrated immunostimulant effects in humans. Animal research has shown that ashwagandha can attenuate the immunosuppression caused by cyclophosphamide.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the basic idea behind this one: ashwagandha may gently nudge the immune system to be more active, while beclomethasone is a steroid that works by calming down inflammation. In theory, that means ashwagandha could work against what your inhaler is trying to do and slightly soften its effect on your airways.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This concern comes from lab and animal studies, not from real people using an inhaled steroid like beclomethasone. Beclomethasone mostly acts right in your lungs, so a whole-body immune effect from a supplement is unlikely to make a big difference for asthma control. Still, if you ever notice more wheezing, coughing, or chest tightness, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Beclomethasone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, ashwagandha might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that ashwagandha extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for these two together. Beclomethasone is a corticosteroid you breathe in to calm swelling in your airways, and it's partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies (not human ones) suggest ashwagandha may speed that enzyme up a bit. In theory, that could clear beclomethasone a little faster and make it slightly less effective, meaning you might notice more wheezing, chest tightness, or coughing if your asthma isn't as well controlled.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This is theoretical, based only on test-tube research, and it's rated as a minor interaction. Inhaled beclomethasone also works mostly right in the lungs, so a liver effect may matter even less. Still, if you start ashwagandha, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and keep an eye on your breathing.

Ashwagandha is an Ayurvedic herb most often taken to help with stress, anxiety, and sleep, and some small studies suggest it may help, though the evidence is still limited. About Beclomethasone Oral Inhalation

What Is Beclomethasone Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand names: Beclovent, Vanceril

Beclomethasone dipropionate HFA inhalation aerosol (brand: Qvar Redihaler) is used for the ongoing, daily management of asthma in adults and children 5 years of age and older. It is a preventive (maintenance) therapy — not a rescue inhaler — meaning it helps control asthma over time rather than treating sudden symptoms.

Important: Qvar Redihaler is not for the relief of sudden asthma attacks or acute bronchospasm. Always keep a separate fast-acting (rescue) inhaler on hand for those moments.
