Mallow and Sumatriptan

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Sumatriptan and Mallow in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Mallow at all — not against Sumatriptan, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

What Mallow Itself Has Been Linked To

This is not an interaction — nothing below involves Sumatriptan. It is the side-effect record for Mallow on its own, from the licensed Natural Medicines monograph. If something new turns up after you add Mallow, this list is the first place to look.

Everything above comes from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record for Mallow — expand a row for the licensed statement it rests on. We read the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Sumatriptan’s FDA label too, and the two lists don’t meaningfully overlap — which is why no Sumatriptan column appears here.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Sumatriptan page

“The supplement risk that matters most with sumatriptan (Tosymra) is serotonin overload. This migraine drug works through serotonin receptors, and 20 of the 50 interacting ingredients on file, 5-HTP among them, can push serotonin activity higher still, raising the risk of serotonin syndrome (agitation, racing heart, fever).”

About Mallow

What is Mallow?

  • Sore throat and cough
  • Digestive upset
  • Skin irritation
  • Mild constipation
  • Mouth and gum irritation

Mallow (Malva sylvestris) is a traditional herb valued for its soothing, mucilage-rich leaves and flowers, used mostly for sore throat, cough, and minor skin or stomach irritation. Scientific evidence in humans is limited, so it should be seen as a gentle traditional remedy rather than a proven treatment. It is generally considered low-risk for short-term use, but pregnant and breastfeeding people should avoid it due to a lack of safety data.

Malva sylvestris · Malvaceae · Leaves and flowers (sometimes roots) · Tea, dried herb, capsules, liquid extracts, topical preparations, gargles

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Mallow is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Mallow record says about it on its own.

Mallow: dosing

There is no standardized, well-established dose for mallow. Traditional use often involves a tea made from a small amount of dried leaves or flowers steeped in hot water.Because products vary widely in strength and form (tea, capsule, or liquid extract), the best approach is to follow the directions on the product label.

About Sumatriptan

What Is Sumatriptan Used For?

Brand name: Tosymra

Sumatriptan treats acute migraine attacks — with or without aura — in adults. It is available as tablets, nasal spray, nasal capsule, and subcutaneous injection, and is used to stop a migraine once it has started, not to prevent future attacks.

The subcutaneous injection forms — including Imitrex injection, Sumatriptan injection, and Sumatriptan Succinate injection — are also approved to treat acute cluster headache in adults. Zembrace SymTouch (subcutaneous injection) is approved for acute migraine only. Tablets and nasal forms are not established for cluster headache.
