Here's the simple version: both of these move your bowels, just in different ways. Bisacodyl (Dulcolax) is a stimulant laxative that revs up your intestines to push things along, while manna works by pulling extra water into your gut. Stacking the two means you can lose more fluid and minerals (like potassium and sodium) than you would with either one alone. That can leave you feeling dehydrated, lightheaded, weak, or crampy, with the runs.

I'll be honest, this concern is mostly theoretical and based on how each one works, not on strong studies. Still, doubling up on laxatives usually isn't needed. Before combining them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor so you don't overdo it.

Manna is the dried, sweet sap of the flowering ash tree (Fraxinus ornus) and is best known as a gentle, mild laxative because it contains a sugar alcohol called mannitol. It is generally considered mild and is sometimes used for occasional constipation, but high-quality modern studies are limited, so talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

About Bisacodyl

What Is Bisacodyl Used For?

Brand names: Dulcolax, Gentlax

Bisacodyl is used for the temporary relief of occasional constipation and irregularity. Oral tablets (including Dulcolax Stimulant Laxative and Fleet tablets) generally produce a bowel movement within 6 to 12 hours.

Rectal suppositories (such as Dulcolax Laxative, Conlax, Avedana Gentle Laxative, and others) typically work within 15 minutes to 1 hour. The Fleet Enema (rectal) is also used for relief of fecal impaction (a severe blockage of stool) and for removal of residue after barium administration (a procedure used in certain imaging tests), and usually works within 5 to 20 minutes.
