Manna and Phenolphthalein

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

STIMULANT LAXATIVES

Why this applies to Phenolphthalein

Phenolphthalein falls under STIMULANT LAXATIVES — the group Manna interacts with.

Theoretically, manna might increase the risk for fluid and electrolyte loss when taken with stimulant laxatives.
Due to the osmotic laxative effects of manna, concomitant use with stimulant laxatives might compound fluid and electrolyte loss.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. Both of these work on your bowels, just in different ways. Phenolphthalein is a stimulant laxative that pushes the colon to move things along, while manna pulls extra water into the gut to soften stool. Put them together and you're using two laxatives at once, so the worry is that they stack up and cause too much watery diarrhea.

The real concern there isn't your stomach, it's losing too much fluid and important minerals like potassium and sodium. That can leave you feeling weak, dizzy, crampy, or with an off heartbeat if it gets bad. To be fair, this caution is theoretical, based on how the two work, not solid studies. Still, doubling up on laxatives usually isn't needed, so check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Phenolphthalein page

“Phenolphthalein is a stimulant laxative itself, and that is the heart of the problem with these combinations. Most of the herbs on file, jalap being one, act the same way, so pairing them can drain fluid and potassium quickly.”

About Manna

What is Manna?

Manna
  • Gentle constipation relief
  • Mild laxative for children and elderly
  • Natural sweetener
  • Occasional bowel softening

Manna is the dried, sweet sap of the flowering ash tree (Fraxinus ornus) and is best known as a gentle, mild laxative because it contains a sugar alcohol called mannitol. It is generally considered mild and is sometimes used for occasional constipation, but high-quality modern studies are limited, so talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
