Manna and Bendroflumethiazide, Nadolol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

DIURETIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Bendroflumethiazide, Nadolol

Bendroflumethiazide, Nadolol falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Manna interacts with.

Theoretically, manna might increase the risk of hypokalemia when taken with diuretic drugs.
Manna contains mannitol, which acts as an osmotic laxative. Overuse of manna might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss, increasing the risk of hypokalemia.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Corzide is a combo pill that pairs bendroflumethiazide (a water pill, or diuretic) with nadolol (a beta blocker). The diuretic part already nudges your body to flush out potassium in the urine. Here's the concern with manna: it works as an osmotic laxative, and if you overuse it, the extra fluid loss from loose stools can add to that potassium drop. The result could be hypokalemia, which means low potassium.

If your potassium dips too low, you might feel unusually weak, tired, crampy, or notice an irregular heartbeat. I'll be honest, this is a theoretical caution based on how these things work, not strong study data, and occasional small use likely won't cause trouble. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using manna regularly.

  • Gentle constipation relief
  • Mild laxative for children and elderly
  • Natural sweetener
  • Occasional bowel softening

Manna is the dried, sweet sap of the flowering ash tree (Fraxinus ornus) and is best known as a gentle, mild laxative because it contains a sugar alcohol called mannitol. It is generally considered mild and is sometimes used for occasional constipation, but high-quality modern studies are limited, so talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
