ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Methantheline Bromide
Methantheline Bromide falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Marjoram interacts with.
Some anticholinergic drugs include atropine, benztropine (Cogentin), biperiden (Akineton), procyclidine (Kemadrin), and trihexyphenidyl (Artane).
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version. Methantheline (Banthine) works by blocking acetylcholine, which is how it calms an overactive stomach or bladder and eases cramping. In lab dishes, marjoram extract seems to do the opposite by slowing down the enzyme that breaks acetylcholine apart, so more of it sticks around. In theory, that could partly work against your medication and make it a little less effective, so you might notice more cramping or urgency than expected.
The honest part: this is only a test-tube idea, not something proven in people. Sprinkling marjoram on your food almost certainly won't matter. Concentrated capsules or oils are where I'd be a bit cautious. If you take those regularly, just run it past your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Methantheline Bromide page
“Methantheline bromide (Banthine) is an anticholinergic, prescribed to calm cramping in an overactive gut or bladder, and this list deserves real caution before you add supplements. Three of the 46 entries rate major, and one of them, activated charcoal, shows up in everyday remedies for gas and stomach upset.”

About Marjoram
What is Marjoram?
- Digestive upset
- Sleep and relaxation
- Respiratory complaints (cough, congestion)
- Menstrual discomfort
- Aromatherapy for stress
Marjoram is a Mediterranean kitchen herb related to oregano that is widely used in food and traditional medicine for digestive, sleep, and respiratory complaints. Most of its health claims rest on traditional use and small lab or animal studies rather than strong human trials. It is generally considered safe as a food, but concentrated supplements and essential oils should be used with caution and avoided in pregnancy.
