Here's the simple version: marshmallow root is loaded with mucilage, a slippery fiber that swells into a gel in your gut. The concern is that this gel coating could trap a little bit of ezetimibe and keep it from being fully absorbed. Since ezetimibe works right inside the intestine to block cholesterol absorption, anything that interferes with its own absorption could make it slightly less effective, meaning your LDL might not drop quite as much.

I want to be clear that this is theoretical, based on how the fiber behaves, not on real cases of people having problems. To stay on the safe side, just take your marshmallow about 30 to 60 minutes after your ezetimibe. If you have questions, your pharmacist is happy to help.

Marshmallow root is a traditional herb rich in soothing, gel-like fibers called mucilage, which is why it has long been used for coughs, sore throats, and stomach irritation. Evidence for these uses is mostly traditional and preliminary, but it is generally considered gentle and well-tolerated for short-term use. About Ezetimibe

What Is Ezetimibe Used For?

Brand name: Zetia

Ezetimibe is used to reduce elevated LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), total cholesterol, and related blood fats as an addition to a cholesterol-lowering diet. It is approved for adults and, in certain situations, for children 9 or 10 years of age and older, depending on the condition being treated.

Specific uses include: primary hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol from diet or genetics), mixed hyperlipidemia (when combined with fenofibrate), heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH — an inherited form of high cholesterol), homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH — a more severe inherited form), and homozygous familial sitosterolemia (a rare condition where the body absorbs too many plant sterols). Zetia is also specifically approved to lower LDL in pediatric patients 10 and older with HeFH or HoFH when combined with a statin.
