Here's the simple version: marshmallow root is loaded with mucilage, a slippery fiber that swells into a gel in your stomach. The concern is that this gel could form a coating that grabs onto your losartan and keeps some of it from being absorbed. If less gets in, your blood pressure medicine might work a little less well, so you could see numbers creep up. Keep in mind losartan is partly a prodrug, so its body needs to absorb and activate it to do the job.

Honestly, this is a theoretical worry based on how mucilage behaves, not real-world reports. An easy fix is spacing them out: take your losartan first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the marshmallow. When in doubt, run it by your pharmacist.

Marshmallow root is a traditional herb rich in soothing, gel-like fibers called mucilage, which is why it has long been used for coughs, sore throats, and stomach irritation. Evidence for these uses is mostly traditional and preliminary, but it is generally considered gentle and well-tolerated for short-term use. As with any supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medicines.

What Is Losartan Used For?

Brand name: Cozaar

Losartan tablets — available as branded Cozaar and several generic products — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Losartan tablets are also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure who also have left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged left side of the heart). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients.

Losartan tablets are additionally approved to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy). Arbli, the oral suspension form, shares these same approved uses.
