Rizatriptan falls under Serotonergic Drugs — the group Methylene Blue interacts with.

Combining serotonergic drugs with methylene blue can cause additive serotonergic effects, including serotonin syndrome. Methylene blue inhibits monoamine oxidase A. Intravenous or intrapulmonary use has resulted in serotonin syndrome, including reported fatalities, in patients taking some serotonergic drugs. This effect has not been reported with oral methylene blue. However, tell patients to avoid taking methylene blue with serotonergic drugs.

Here's the concern with pairing these two. Rizatriptan works on serotonin pathways to calm a migraine, and methylene blue acts like a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, meaning it blocks an enzyme that normally clears serotonin out of your system. Stack those together and serotonin can climb too high, raising the risk of a reaction called serotonin syndrome. Watch for agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shaking or twitching muscles, fever, or confusion.

The serious cases were tied to injected methylene blue, not the oral supplement, so the real-world risk from a capsule is likely lower. Still, this isn't a combo to guess about. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using methylene blue alongside your rizatriptan.

Methylene blue is a synthetic dye that is an FDA-approved prescription medicine for a rare blood disorder called methemoglobinemia, and it is also used as a diagnostic dye. Its popular use as a supplement for energy, brain health, or anti-aging is not well supported by solid human evidence, and it can cause serious side effects. What Is Rizatriptan Used For?

Brand name: Rizafilm

Rizatriptan treats migraine headaches — with or without aura — when they occur. It is approved for adults and for children and teens ages 6 to 17. It is available as a regular tablet (Maxalt, Rizatriptan, Rizatriptan Benzoate), an orally disintegrating tablet (Maxalt, Maxalt-MLT, Rizatriptan Benzoate ODT), and a dissolving oral film placed on the tongue (Rizafilm).

Rizatriptan is for stopping a migraine once it starts — it is not meant to prevent migraines from happening, and it is not approved for cluster headaches. It should only be used after a doctor has confirmed a migraine diagnosis.
