Alprazolam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Nutmeg interacts with.

Theoretically, nutmeg might increase the risk of additive sedation when taken with CNS depressants.
Animal studies suggest that nutmeg extracts and several volatile oils in nutmeg, such as methyleugenol, isoeugenol, safrole, myristicin, trimyristin, 1,8-cineole, and geranyl acetate, have sedative effects. One animal study shows that petroleum ether extracts of nutmeg can potentiate the effects of pentobarbital or phenobarbital. However, evidence from other animal research suggests that the nutmeg constituent myristicin can actually reduce sleeping time in rats pretreated with phenobarbital.

Here's the gist: Xanax (alprazolam) already calms the brain to ease anxiety and panic, and it commonly causes drowsiness, dizziness, and slowed thinking. Some lab and animal studies hint that certain compounds in nutmeg may have a mild sedating effect of their own. If both push in the same direction, the worry is they could add up and leave you feeling extra sleepy, foggy, or unsteady.

I want to be honest, though: this is mostly theoretical, based on animal research, and the results aren't even consistent (some studies actually showed nutmeg shortening sleep). A pinch of nutmeg in your cooking is very unlikely to be a problem. Large "medicinal" doses are a different story and can be dangerous on their own. If you're considering big amounts, check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Alprazolam Used For?

Brand names: Xanax, Niravam

Alprazolam treats generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, in adults. These uses are supported across multiple alprazolam products, including tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, oral solution, and extended-release tablets.

Xanax (tablet) is indicated for the acute treatment of GAD and for panic disorder. Xanax XR (extended-release tablet) and alprazolam extended-release tablets are indicated specifically for panic disorder with or without agoraphobia — not for GAD. Alprazolam orally disintegrating tablets and alprazolam oral solution are indicated for both GAD and panic disorder.
