Omega-6 Fatty Acids and Bendamustine

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Bendamustine and Omega-6 Fatty Acids in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Omega-6 Fatty Acids at all — not against Bendamustine, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Omega-6 Fatty Acids in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy And Lactation Likely Safe

When consumed as part of the diet in amounts between 5% and 10% of daily calories according to the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range (AMDR).

Pregnancy And Lactation Possibly Unsafe

When high amounts of omega-6 fatty acids are consumed in the diet. Population research suggests that the highest maternal intakes of omega-6 fatty acids (15.2-47.6 grams or 137-428 kcal daily) during pregnancy is associated with a 2.4-times greater odds of giving birth to an infant below the 10th percentile for birth weight when compared with the lowest maternal intakes (0.4-5.7 grams daily). In addition, population research in women with a history of atopy suggests that the highest blood levels of omega-6 fatty acids during the second trimester is associated with an increased odds of having a child develop atopic dermatitis by age 4-6 years when compared with the lowest intakes. There is insufficient reliable information available about supplemental omega-6 fatty acids; avoid using.

What Bendamustine Is Prescribed For, and What Omega-6 Fatty Acids Has Been Studied For

These two come up together because they touch the same health topic — not because they do the same job. Bendamustine is a prescription medicine with approved uses on its FDA label. Omega-6 Fatty Acids is a supplement: what follows is what researchers have looked at it for, and how strong that evidence is.

Bendamustine is prescribed for: Bendamustine hydrochloride injection is used to treat adults with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). It is also used for adults with indolent B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) — a slow-growing type of blood cancer — when the disease has continued to progress during or within six months of treatment with rituximab or a rituximab-containing regimen. For CLL, how well bendamustine works compared to other first-line treatments (aside from chlorambucil) has not been fully established.

Omega-6 Fatty Acids has been studied for:

  • Cancer studied, not established Omega-6 Fatty Acids has been studied for this. Natural Medicines rates the evidence: Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate Read what the research shows

    Omega-6 Fatty Acids for cancer

It is unclear if increased dietary intake of omega-6 fatty acids is beneficial for cancer prevention.

Effectiveness ratings and the research summaries above are the verbatim record from the Natural Medicines database, which grades evidence from “Effective” down to “Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate”. A rating below the top of that scale means researchers have looked at it — not that it works, and never that it can stand in for a prescribed medicine. Do not stop or replace Bendamustine on your own; if you are taking Omega-6 Fatty Acids for the same health topic, tell your prescriber, especially if the medicine is being adjusted to a target.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bendamustine page

“Bendamustine (Treanda, Belrapzo, Vivimusta) is IV chemotherapy for chronic lymphocytic leukemia and certain lymphomas, and the liver clears it through an enzyme called CYP1A2. That enzyme is why nearly all 87 supplements on this page appear here, since about 80 of them can push CYP1A2 up or down, which could either raise side effects o…”

About Omega-6 Fatty Acids

What is Omega-6 Fatty Acids?

  • General nutrition and energy
  • Skin conditions like eczema
  • Inflammation support
  • Heart and cholesterol health
  • Nerve health (such as diabetic nerve discomfort)

Omega-6 fatty acids are essential fats your body needs but cannot make on its own, and most people get plenty from everyday foods like vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds. Supplements such as evening primrose or borage oil are sometimes used for skin or other concerns, but the evidence for added benefit is mixed, and balancing omega-6 with omega-3 fats matters more than taking more omega-6. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a supplement.

Dietary fats from plant oils, seeds, nuts, and some animal sources · Vegetable oils (corn, soybean, sunflower, safflower), capsules, evening primrose oil, borage oil, and softgels

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Omega-6 Fatty Acids is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Omega-6 Fatty Acids record says about it on its own.

Omega-6 Fatty Acids: dosing

There is no single standardized dose of omega-6 fatty acids that works for everyone, and most people meet their needs through diet alone. Health organizations describe omega-6 as an essential nutrient but focus on overall fat balance rather than a specific supplement amount. For supplements like evening primrose oil or borage oil, the right amount depends on the specific product and the GLA content.
