Theoretically, Oregon grape might increase serum levels of drugs that are P-glycoprotein (P-gp) substrates.

Here's the gist for Erivedge (vismodegib). Your body uses a kind of cellular bouncer called P-glycoprotein (P-gp) to help push this medicine back out, which keeps its levels in check. Oregon grape (and its berberine compounds) has shown in lab dish studies that it can block that bouncer. If P-gp slows down, more vismodegib could stay in your system, which in theory could mean stronger side effects like muscle spasms, hair loss, taste changes, fatigue, or nausea.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's only seen in test-tube research, not in real people, so it's a theoretical concern. Still, since vismodegib is a cancer drug, I'd play it safe. Please check with your oncology team or pharmacist before combining the two.

Erivedge (vismodegib) is used to treat adults with basal cell carcinoma — the most common type of skin cancer — in two specific situations: when the cancer has spread to other parts of the body (metastatic basal cell carcinoma), or when it is locally advanced and has returned after surgery, or when surgery and radiation are not options.

It is not approved for use in children.
