Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: tragacanth is a gel-forming fiber, and like other soluble fibers, it can grab onto a pill in your stomach and gut. With vismodegib (Erivedge), the worry is that this gel could change how much of your medicine actually gets absorbed into your bloodstream. It might lower the amount your body takes in, which could mean less cancer-fighting effect, or it could shift absorption the other way. Honestly, we just don't know the exact direction.

To be clear, this is theoretical, based on how fiber gums behave, not on real studies with this drug. A practical fix is spacing them out: take your vismodegib first, then tragacanth 30 to 60 minutes later. Since this is serious cancer treatment, please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist before mixing the two.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Vismodegib Used For?

Erivedge (vismodegib) is used to treat adults with basal cell carcinoma — the most common type of skin cancer — in two specific situations: when the cancer has spread to other parts of the body (metastatic basal cell carcinoma), or when it is locally advanced and has returned after surgery, or when surgery and radiation are not options.

It is not approved for use in children.
