Dabigatran (Pradaxa) is a blood thinner that helps keep clots from forming, which is exactly what you want after a DVT, PE, or with atrial fibrillation. The concern here is that a component of palm oil (palm olein) may make your platelets a little stickier, meaning they clump together more easily. In theory, that could work against dabigatran and slightly chip away at the clot protection you're counting on.

Honestly, this is a theoretical worry, and the kind of palm oil used in everyday cooking is very unlikely to cause a problem. Concentrated palm-oil supplements are where I'd pay closer attention. Since dabigatran is a clot-prevention drug, don't change anything on your own, but do give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before starting a palm-oil supplement.

Palm oil is a widely used edible oil pressed from the fruit of the oil palm tree, and red palm oil is a notable source of vitamin A and vitamin E compounds called tocotrienols. As a food it is generally considered safe, but it is high in saturated fat, so it should be used in moderation as part of a balanced diet. About Dabigatran

What Is Dabigatran Used For?

Brand names: Pradaxa, Pradax

Dabigatran etexilate capsules are approved for adults to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism (blood clots traveling through the body) in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm not caused by a heart valve problem). Capsules are also used to treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT — a blood clot in a deep vein, usually the leg) and pulmonary embolism (PE — a clot in the lungs), to prevent those clots from coming back, and to prevent DVT and PE in adults who have had hip replacement surgery.

For children, the capsule form is approved for treating VTE (venous thromboembolism — blood clots in veins) and reducing recurrence in patients aged 8 to under 18. Pradaxa Oral Pellets are approved specifically for children aged 3 months to under 12 years for the same treatment and recurrence-prevention purposes.
