Parsley and Aspirin, Caffeine, Dover's Pwd

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 3 Interactions?

Parsley interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Caffeine, Dover's Pwd falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Parsley in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

1 of 3

Why this applies to Aspirin, Caffeine, Dover's Pwd

Aspirin, Caffeine, Dover's Pwd falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Parsley interacts with.

Theoretically, parsley might increase serum levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
Laboratory research suggests that parsley can inhibit CYP1A2.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combination product contains caffeine, and that is the piece parsley might touch. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to clear caffeine. Lab studies hint that parsley may slow this enzyme down a bit, which could let caffeine linger longer in your system. In plain terms, your usual dose might feel a little stronger, so you could notice things like jitteriness, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or an upset stomach.

Keep in mind this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, not real-world cases, and normal cooking amounts of parsley are very unlikely to matter. Concentrated parsley supplements or seed extracts are the bigger question. If you take those regularly, just check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

2 of 3

Aspirin, Caffeine, Dover's Pwd also falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS.

Theoretically, parsley might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Animal research suggests that parsley has antiplatelet effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combination product contains aspirin, which already thins your blood by reducing how well your platelets stick together. Parsley, at least in animal studies, seems to nudge platelets in the same direction. So in theory, pairing concentrated parsley supplements with this medicine could add up and slightly raise your bleeding risk. That might show up as easier bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or stomach upset.

Here's the reassuring part: this concern comes from lab and animal research, not solid human studies, so it's more theoretical than proven. Normal cooking and seasoning amounts of parsley are very unlikely to matter. If you're using strong parsley capsules, seed extracts, or the oil, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

ASPIRIN

3 of 3
Theoretically, aspirin might increase the severity of allergic reactions to parsley.
In one case, severe urticaria and swelling were reported after taking aspirin with parsley in an individual with a known mild parsley allergy.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the honest scoop on combining parsley with this aspirin-containing product (which pairs aspirin with caffeine and Dover's powder). The only concern on file is pretty narrow: in someone who already had a known mild parsley allergy, taking aspirin alongside parsley seemed to crank up that allergic response, with reports of severe hives (urticaria) and swelling. The aspirin part of this combo is the player here. It's thought aspirin can sometimes amplify an existing allergy, not create a brand new one.

This is based on a single anecdotal case, so it's unlikely to affect most people, especially with normal food amounts of parsley. If you've never reacted to parsley, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. But if you do have a parsley allergy, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated parsley supplements with this medicine.

About Parsley

What is Parsley?

Parsley
  • Water retention and bloating
  • Urinary and bladder support
  • Digestive upset
  • Freshening breath
  • Source of vitamins and antioxidants

Parsley is a popular culinary herb that is safe to eat in normal food amounts and is a good source of vitamins K and C. It is traditionally used as a diuretic and for digestion, but solid human evidence for medicinal benefits is limited. Concentrated supplements, seed extracts, and the essential oil are much stronger than food and should be used cautiously, especially during pregnancy.
