Pata De Vaca and Insulin Aspart

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Insulin Aspart

Insulin Aspart falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Pata De Vaca interacts with.

Animal research suggests that pata de vaca may have hypoglycemic effects. However, preliminary clinical research shows that pata de vaca does not reduce blood glucose levels. Until more is known, use with caution. Theoretically, concomitant use of pata de vaca with antidiabetes drugs might affect glucose control and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Dose adjustments to diabetes medications might be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: insulin aspart already does one main job, which is to lower your blood sugar. Pata de vaca tea is traditionally used to help with blood sugar too, so the worry is that the two could stack on top of each other and push your sugar down too far. If that happens, you might feel shaky, sweaty, dizzy, confused, or very hungry, which are the classic signs of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

I'll be honest with you, though, this is mostly a theoretical concern. Animal studies hinted at a blood-sugar-lowering effect, but early human research didn't really show one. So I wouldn't panic. Just check your glucose a little more often if you start the tea, watch for lows, and loop in your doctor or pharmacist before combining them so any insulin dose changes are handled safely.

“Every one of the 239 supplements listed for insulin aspart (Fiasp) touches the same thing the drug exists to manage, blood sugar, so this list warrants genuine care rather than a quick skim. Most entries add to insulin's glucose-lowering effect, raising the risk of hypoglycemia, and with a rapid-acting mealtime insulin a low can become…”

  • General tonic

Pata de Vaca is a South American plant whose leaves are traditionally brewed as a tea to help support blood sugar, earning it the nickname 'vegetable insulin.' About Insulin Aspart (rDNA Origin) Injection

What Is Insulin Aspart (rDNA Origin) Injection Used For?

Brand name: Fiasp

Insulin aspart is used to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in people with diabetes mellitus. It is approved for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes in adults, and for diabetes mellitus in pediatric patients.

Insulin Aspart Protamine and Insulin Aspart Mix 70/30 is a pre-mixed product that combines a rapid-acting and an intermediate-acting insulin aspart. It is approved to improve blood sugar control in adult patients with diabetes mellitus. It is not recommended for treating diabetic ketoacidosis, and because its ratio of rapid-acting to intermediate-acting insulin is fixed, it does not allow for separate mealtime versus background dose adjustments.
