Canagliflozin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Pata De Vaca interacts with.

Animal research suggests that pata de vaca may have hypoglycemic effects. However, preliminary clinical research shows that pata de vaca does not reduce blood glucose levels. Until more is known, use with caution. Theoretically, concomitant use of pata de vaca with antidiabetes drugs might affect glucose control and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Dose adjustments to diabetes medications might be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Here's the simple version: pata de vaca is a tea that may gently nudge your blood sugar downward, and Invokana (canagliflozin) already works to lower it by helping your kidneys flush extra sugar out in your urine. Stack the two together and, in theory, your blood sugar could dip lower than you want.

I'll be honest with you though, this concern is mostly theoretical. Animal studies hinted at a blood-sugar effect, but the small human studies didn't really show one, so we're being cautious rather than alarmed. If you do try it, watch for signs of low sugar like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling foggy, and keep checking your numbers. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor first so they can decide if any monitoring or dose tweak makes sense.

What Is Canagliflozin Used For?

Brand name: Invokana

Invokana (canagliflozin) is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes. It is not for type 1 diabetes.

In adults with type 2 diabetes, Invokana is also used to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death in those with established cardiovascular disease, and to reduce the risk of serious kidney complications — including end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization for heart failure — in those with diabetic kidney disease and high levels of protein in the urine.
