Phellodendron + Oxycodone
Oxycodone brand names: OxyContin, Roxicodone, OxyIR, Percolone, Oxecta, and others.
Oxycodone falls into 2 drug categories that Phellodendron can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, phellodendron might increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Phellodendron interacts with whole categories of medication. Oxycodone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Phellodendron in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 2Why this applies to Oxycodone
Oxycodone falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Phellodendron interacts with.
Phellodendron contains berberine. Animal research suggests that berberine may have sedative effects. Theoretically, phellodendron might also have CNS depressants effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: oxycodone is a strong opioid pain reliever that already calms down your central nervous system, causing drowsiness, slowed breathing, and sometimes confusion. Phellodendron contains berberine, and in animal studies berberine showed mild sedative-type effects. So the worry is simple stacking. If you take this herb alongside oxycodone, the two could theoretically add up and leave you more sleepy, foggy, or lightheaded than oxycodone alone.
I want to be honest about the evidence here. This is theoretical, based on how these compounds behave in the lab and in animals, not on solid human studies. It's not a dangerous chemical clash, just a possible extra layer of drowsiness. Still, oxycodone is nothing to take chances with, so please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and never adjust your dose on your own.

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Oxycodone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES.
Phellodendron contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence show that berberine can inhibit CYP2D6. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit CYP2D6.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the wrinkle with this pairing. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to turn oxycodone into oxymorphone, a more potent painkiller. Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab studies suggest can slow that same enzyme down. So in theory, less of your oxycodone would be converted, and you might get weaker pain relief than expected. Oxycodone also works partly on its own, so the effect may be modest.
To be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave in lab tests, not something proven in real patients. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since pain control matters, mention the supplement to your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

This page covers Phellodendron only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Oxycodone page lists 145 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

By severity: 8 major · 114 moderate · 23 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Oxycodone page
“Oxycodone is a potent opioid painkiller, and anything that deepens its sedation can slow breathing itself, which is why this list deserves genuine respect. Of the 145 supplement and herbal ingredients on record, eight rate major, and the biggest cluster by far, 78 ingredients, adds extra drowsiness on top of the opioid's own.”

About Phellodendron
What is Phellodendron?
- Digestive complaints and diarrhea
- Inflammation and joint discomfort
- Stress and weight management (in combination products)
- Skin conditions (topical, traditional)
- Antimicrobial support
Phellodendron is a traditional Chinese medicine bark (Huang Bai) that contains berberine and other plant compounds with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in lab studies. Human evidence for most uses is limited, and it is often sold in combination with other herbs, making its individual effects hard to judge. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Oxycodone
What Is Oxycodone Used For?
Brand names: OxyContin, Roxicodone, OxyIR, Percolone, Oxecta, OxyNeo
Oxycodone treats pain that is severe enough to need an opioid pain medicine, when other treatments are not enough. Other options include non-opioid pain relievers or opioid combination products.
Some products are for specific situations. Extended-release products (OxyContin, Xtampza ER, and oxycodone extended-release tablets) are for severe, persistent pain that needs daily, around-the-clock treatment. They are not for as-needed use. The 100 mg per 5 mL (20 mg/mL) oral solution is only for opioid-tolerant patients. Oxaydo is labeled for acute and chronic pain.
