Phellodendron + Norethindrone
Norethindrone brand names: Aygestin, Norlutin, Nor-QD, Micronor, Norlutate, and others.
Phellodendron has a moderate interaction with Norethindrone. Theoretically, phellodendron might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Norethindrone
Norethindrone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Phellodendron interacts with.
Phellodendron contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical research show that berberine moderately inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit CYP3A4.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: your body clears norethindrone using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab and early human studies suggest can moderately slow that same enzyme. If that happens, norethindrone could clear out a bit more slowly and build up in your blood, which might mean a little more of its usual effects, like breakthrough spotting, breast tenderness, bloating, mood changes, or nausea.
I want to be honest about the strength here: this is theoretical, based on how these things work in the lab, not on real-world reports of problems. Concentrated supplement doses are more likely to matter than tiny culinary amounts. If you'd like to use both, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on how you feel.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Norethindrone page
“Norethindrone is a progestin used for birth control and for heavy or irregular periods, which means a supplement that quietly weakens it can end in an unplanned pregnancy, so I read this list with genuine caution. Three of the 152 ingredients on it rate major.”

About Phellodendron
What is Phellodendron?
- Digestive complaints and diarrhea
- Inflammation and joint discomfort
- Stress and weight management (in combination products)
- Skin conditions (topical, traditional)
- Antimicrobial support
Phellodendron is a traditional Chinese medicine bark (Huang Bai) that contains berberine and other plant compounds with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in lab studies. Human evidence for most uses is limited, and it is often sold in combination with other herbs, making its individual effects hard to judge. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Norethindrone
What Is Norethindrone Used For?
Brand names: Aygestin, Norlutin, Nor-QD, Micronor, Norlutate, Camila, Errin, Jolivette, Nora-BE
Most norethindrone products on this page are progestin-only birth control pills. They are used to prevent pregnancy.
Norethindrone acetate tablets, including Gallifrey, are a different use. They treat secondary amenorrhea (missed periods), endometriosis, and abnormal uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalance when no underlying structural cause, such as submucous fibroids or uterine cancer, is found.
