Avacopan falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Rhubarb interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of rhubarb with potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage.
Some animal research suggests that anthraquinones in rhubarb might have hepatotoxic effects. Also, rhubarb use has been linked to at least 24 cases of liver injury, although details on the dose of rhubarb and duration of use in these cases is unclear.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with Avacopan (Tavneos): this medicine can already put some stress on your liver, which is why your doctor checks your liver enzymes before you start and along the way. Rhubarb root supplements contain compounds called anthraquinones, and there's a concern they may be hard on the liver too. Stacking two things that can each affect the liver could, in theory, add up.

I want to be honest that this worry is mostly theoretical, based on animal studies and a handful of reported liver injury cases where the details were unclear. Eating rhubarb stalks in a pie is not the issue, concentrated root supplements are. Still, since you're on Avacopan, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding rhubarb root, and report any yellowing skin, dark urine, or belly pain.

What Is Avacopan Used For?

Brand name: Tavneos

Tavneos (avacopan) is used to treat severe active ANCA-associated vasculitis in adults — specifically the forms known as granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) and microscopic polyangiitis (MPA). These are serious autoimmune conditions in which the immune system attacks small blood vessels, causing damage to the kidneys, lungs, and other organs.

Tavneos is used as an add-on treatment alongside standard therapies, including glucocorticoids (steroid medicines). It is not a replacement for steroids — it works together with them.
