Rhubarb + Verapamil
Verapamil brand names: Isoptin SR, Verelan, Isoptin, Calan SR, Verelan SR, and others.
Rhubarb has a moderate interaction with Verapamil. Theoretically, concomitant use of rhubarb with potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Verapamil
Verapamil falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Rhubarb interacts with.
Some animal research suggests that anthraquinones in rhubarb might have hepatotoxic effects. Also, rhubarb use has been linked to at least 24 cases of liver injury, although details on the dose of rhubarb and duration of use in these cases is unclear.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the deal with rhubarb root and your verapamil. This isn't about rhubarb changing how verapamil works in your heart or blood vessels. Instead, the concern is about the liver. Verapamil is one of many medicines that can, in some people, put a little stress on the liver. Rhubarb root (the concentrated supplement, not the pie filling) contains compounds called anthraquinones that have been loosely tied to liver injury in a handful of reports.
The thinking is that stacking two things that may bother the liver could, in theory, add up. I want to be honest though: this is theoretical, based mostly on animal data and unclear case reports. Eating rhubarb stalks as food is very unlikely to matter. If you take a daily rhubarb supplement, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Verapamil page
“This is one of the longer interaction lists we publish, and with verapamil (Calan, Verelan) it warrants genuine care, starting with the ten major-rated entries. Verapamil lowers blood pressure and slows the heart, so most of the 295 ingredients on file either push that effect further than intended or change how much of the drug reaches…”

About Rhubarb
What is Rhubarb?
- Constipation
- Digestive upset
- Menopausal symptoms
- Kidney and liver conditions (traditional)
- Pancreatitis (hospital/traditional use)
Rhubarb root has a long history of use as a laxative and in traditional Chinese medicine, and its edible stalks are a common food. Most medicinal claims are backed by limited or low-quality evidence, and the root can cause cramping and diarrhea. The leaves are toxic and should never be eaten, and rhubarb supplements are best avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Verapamil
What Is Verapamil Used For?
Brand names: Isoptin SR, Verelan, Isoptin, Calan SR, Verelan SR, Calan, Covera HS, Verap, Veramil
Verapamil tablets and film-coated tablets are used to treat angina — including vasospastic (Prinzmetal's) angina, unstable angina, and chronic stable angina — as well as certain abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and high blood pressure (essential hypertension). For arrhythmias, regular-release tablets are used alongside digoxin to control heart rate in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation, and to help prevent episodes of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), a type of rapid heartbeat.
Extended-release and sustained-release oral forms (tablets and capsules) are indicated specifically for high blood pressure. Verapamil hydrochloride injection is used in hospital settings for rapid conversion of SVT to normal rhythm and for temporary control of fast heart rates in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation.

Verapamil Is Linked to Lower Levels of 2 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Verapamil as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Rhubarb — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
