Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with rutin and your Humalog (insulin lispro). Insulin lispro is a fast-acting mealtime insulin that lowers your blood sugar directly, it isn't a prodrug that needs activating. Rutin, in some lab and animal studies, appears to nudge blood sugar downward on its own. So in theory, stacking the two could push your numbers a little lower than expected, raising the chance of a low (hypoglycemia).

I want to be honest though: this is theoretical and based only on animal data, so it's not a strong signal. Watch for shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or sudden hunger, and keep checking your sugars as usual. If you'd like to add rutin, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up first so they can keep an eye on your readings.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Insulin Lispro Recombinant

This page covers Rutin only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Insulin Lispro Recombinant page lists 242 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Chelation Therapy Products (major), Siberian Cocklebur (major), Acai (moderate), African Wild Potato (moderate) and Agaricus Mushroom (moderate).

By severity: 2 major · 211 moderate · 29 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Insulin Lispro Recombinant page

“Two of the 242 entries here rate major, and they are the place to start. Siberian cocklebur has caused severe hypoglycemia, and chelation products containing EDTA can drop blood glucose steeply while also interfering with the insulin itself, so neither belongs anywhere near insulin lispro (Humalog KwikPen).”

About Rutin

What is Rutin?

  • Varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Easy bruising and fragile capillaries
  • Swelling (edema) in the legs
  • General antioxidant support

Rutin is a plant flavonoid (often taken from buckwheat or citrus) that people use mainly for blood vessel and circulation problems like varicose veins and hemorrhoids. The evidence is limited and mostly preliminary, so it should not replace proven treatments. It is generally well tolerated, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
