Here's the simple version: glyburide already lowers your blood sugar by nudging your pancreas to release more insulin. Rutin, in some early animal studies, looks like it may have its own mild blood-sugar-lowering effect. Stack the two together and the worry is that your sugar could dip a little lower than expected, which is what we call hypoglycemia.

If that happens, you might feel shaky, sweaty, dizzy, lightheaded, hungry, or unusually tired. I want to be honest with you, though: this is mostly theoretical and based on lab and animal research, not solid human studies. The amount of rutin you'd get from food is very unlikely to matter. Before adding a rutin supplement, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor, and keep an eye on your glucose readings.

What is Rutin?

Rutin is a plant flavonoid (often taken from buckwheat or citrus) that people use mainly for blood vessel and circulation problems like varicose veins and hemorrhoids. The evidence is limited and mostly preliminary, so it should not replace proven treatments. It is generally well tolerated, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What Is Glyburide Used For?

Brand names: Diabeta, Micronase, Glynase, Glycron, Micronized, Glynase PresTab, Albert Glyburide

Glyburide tablets are used alongside diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious complication where the body produces dangerous levels of acids called ketones).

Glyburide may be used alone or combined with metformin when metformin alone is not enough. It can also be used to help transition patients who are moving from insulin or other diabetes pills to a new regimen, under a doctor's guidance.
