Carisoprodol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Sage interacts with.

Theoretically, sage might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19.
In vitro evidence suggests that aqueous extracts of sage can inhibit CYP2C19. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for carisoprodol (Soma): your body relies on an enzyme called CYP2C19 to help break it down. In lab studies, water-based sage extracts seem to slow that enzyme. If sage did the same thing in people, carisoprodol could clear a little more slowly and build up, which might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, grogginess, or feeling unsteady than you'd expect.

The honest truth is this is only a test-tube finding, and it has never actually been reported in a real person. A sprinkle of sage in your cooking is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated sage capsules or the essential oil are a bigger question mark, so please run that combo by your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

Sage is a common kitchen herb that is generally safe in food amounts and is traditionally used for sore throats, digestion, sweating, and memory. Some early research is encouraging for sore throat and menopausal hot flashes, but most uses are not well proven. Concentrated extracts and the essential oil should be used carefully because high doses contain a compound called thujone, which can be harmful.

Carisoprodol tablets — sold under the brand name Soma, as well as generic versions — are used to relieve discomfort associated with acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions in adults. Think short-term muscle pain and stiffness from things like lower back injuries.

This medication is intended only for short-term use — up to two or three weeks. It has not been proven effective for longer-term use, and the muscle conditions it treats are generally short-lived by nature.
