Lesinurad falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Sage interacts with.

Theoretically, sage might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro evidence suggests that aqueous extracts of sage can inhibit CYP2C9. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for Lesinurad (Zurampic). Your body relies partly on an enzyme called CYP2C9 to break this medicine down. In lab dishes, sage extract appears to slow that same enzyme. If that held true in real life, lesinurad could clear more slowly and build up a bit, which might nudge up the risk of its known side effects, mainly kidney-related issues like changes in kidney function or, rarely, kidney stones.

The honest part: this is only a theoretical concern from test-tube work, and it has never been reported in actual people. Everyday cooking amounts of sage are very unlikely to matter. Concentrated sage extracts or sage oil are a different story. Before starting any sage supplement, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

Sage is a common kitchen herb that is generally safe in food amounts and is traditionally used for sore throats, digestion, sweating, and memory. Some early research is encouraging for sore throat and menopausal hot flashes, but most uses are not well proven. Concentrated extracts and the essential oil should be used carefully because high doses contain a compound called thujone, which can be harmful.

What Is Lesinurad Used For?

  • Lesinurad is used in combination with a xanthine oxidase inhibitor to treat hyperuricemia (high levels of uric acid) in people with gout (sudden attacks of redness, swelling, pain, and heat in one or more joints) whose disease is not controlled with their current medication. Lesinurad is in a class of medications called selective uric acid reabsorption inhibitors. It works by helping the kidneys to remove uric acid from the body.
